screw pump

A screw pump is a type of positive displacement pump that uses rotating screws to move fluids or materials. It consists of two or more intermeshing screws or rotors that rotate inside a cylindrical cavity or housing.

The main components of a screw pump include:
1. Screws/Rotors: These are the primary rotating components of the pump. They usually have helical or screw-shaped threads on their surfaces. The screws are typically mounted on parallel shafts and rotate in opposite directions, creating a sealed cavity between them.
2. Casing/Housing: It is the outer casing or housing that encloses the screws and provides a sealed chamber for fluid transport. The casing has inlet and outlet ports to allow fluid to enter and exit the pump.
3. Bearings: Bearings support the rotating shafts and ensure smooth rotation of the screws. They are usually located at both ends of the screw shafts.
4. Sealing Mechanism: Screw pumps rely on tight clearances between the screws and the casing to create a seal, preventing fluid leakage. In some designs, additional sealing elements such as mechanical seals or packing glands may be used.
The operation of a screw pump involves the following steps:
1. Priming: The pump is initially primed by filling the pump casing and the suction line with the fluid to be pumped.
2. Rotation: As the screws rotate, the fluid or material is trapped in the spaces between the threads of the screws and the casing.
3. Conveying: As the screws continue to rotate, the fluid is pushed along the length of the screw threads towards the discharge port. The trapped fluid moves axially along the screws from the suction side to the discharge side.
4. Discharge: The fluid is expelled through the discharge port as the rotating screws compress the fluid towards the outlet.
Screw pumps are known for their ability to handle viscous fluids and materials with high solids content. They are commonly used in various industries, including oil and gas, wastewater treatment, chemical processing, food processing, and more. Screw pumps offer a smooth and pulsation-free flow, and their design allows for self-priming and reversible operation in some cases.
